Washington State Library's collection of the Swan/Ball family papers, 1867-1917.

This collection consists of diaries, scrapbooks, deeds, homestead certificates and indenture papers for the Cook and Ball families. Theresa Cook Swan Ball was the daughter of one of the early Washington Territorial pioneers. WSL has diaries written by her from 1876 through 1899. Peter Cook kept a daily diary while he and his family were living in Olympia from October 1867 to January 1869. He kept a diary titled, "Diary of his Second Marriage" which he describes their life in Iowa from 1900 to her death in 1901. Peter Cook also wrote a piece called "A short story of his life" which is autobiographical. Peter's daughter, Theresa, kept at least two scrapbooks. These scrapbooks include snippets about their lives, their friends' lives, and poetry she clipped from the newspaper. An article about her father's 90th birthday and his obituary were included in the scrapbooks. There are two books in this collection: "Household Elegances" and a pamphlet titled, "The Inland Empire of the North West, where fortune beckons to the farmer and investor."
